About Addis Ababa Institute of ...
AAiT currently consists of four Schools: Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Chemical and Bio Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering with a student body of about 6000 students. We conduct 4 undergraduate programs with 10 different areas of specialization. AAiT is also complemented by three Centers of Excellence related to water, energy and logistics. We currently have 33 postgraduate programs with more than 500 enrolled students.
Several of the Masterprograms are also available within our extension program and 5 of these are delivered via video links from the famous IIT Delhi and Sweden´s top university KTH.
Even though AAiT has now a high degree of autonomy and its own budget, AAiT is proud that students at AAIT receive AAU degrees and that its staff and students enjoy the stimulation and camaraderie of such a respected intellectual institution.
School of Chemical and Bio-Engineering
At Addis Ababa Institute of Technology, Addis Ababa University, School of Chemical and Bio-Engineering, our primary mission is to develop graduates, who are academically prepared for the broad profession of Chemical Engineering, and producing qualified engineers who are instrumental in development of industrial sector of the country.
The School offers five-year programs leading to B.Sc. Degree, one-and-a-half-year M.Sc. programs as well as three-year PhD programs. Focus areas in Food Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Process Engineering and a stream in Leather Technology are offered under the B.Sc. program. Further specializations in Food, Environmental and Process Engineering areas are offered both at M.Sc. and PhD levels.
Chemical Engineering graduates are trained to be able to select, design, install and operate process plants and supervise the production in process industries such as chemical, food and beverage, leather, fuels, fertilizers, plastics, artificial fibers, paints, glass, minerals, refined metals, cement, paper and pulp, essential and edible oils, sugar, soap, ceramics, pesticides, pharmaceuticals industries, and make feasibility studies, mitigate environmental pollution, design cleaner production technologies, etc.
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The mission of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering is to provide high quality civil engineering education and training, to undertake basic and applied research focusing on local problems while maintaining international standards, and to render professional services for national development.
The School trains civil engineers who are capable of planning infrastructure development and handling the design and construction of a wide range of civil engineering projects, such as buildings, bridges, roads, dams, water treatment plants, water supply systems, irrigation schemes etc. The training produces competent graduates with good problem-solving and research skills at B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels. The graduates contribute to the economic development of the country and upgrade the engineering sector in Ethiopia.
School of Electrical and Computer Engineering
ECE offers a broad range of PHD, Master's, Bachelor's and Diploma programs which are all taught in English. The programs are an opportunity for students with excellent academic performance to obtain competitive degrees of the highest standard.
ECE has identified and offers courses in the following focus areas as they are deemed very important for the development of the country.
Communication Engineering: the communication focus area is aimed at producing engineers that are able to design and test electronic circuits, design and utilize communication networks, conduct research in the area of system design/networking and bring solution in operational settings.
Electrical Power Engineering: the power engineering focus area is aimed at producing engineers that are able to plan, design, analyze, develop, operate, control and maintain electrical power plants (thermal, hydro, renewable), power apparatus, transmission and distribution systems.
Computer Engineering: the computer engineering focus area is aimed at producing engineers that are able to design, develop, analyze and test the hardware and software for systems applicable to any industry.
Industrial Control Engineering: the industrial control engineering focus area is aimed at producing engineers that are able to plan, design, develop and analyze of control and instrumentation system applied for monitoring, data acquisition and data analysis of electrical and non-electrical systems including digital, analogue, robust and higher order controllers.
Microelectronics Engineering: the microelectronics engineering focus area is aimed at producing engineers that are able to plan, design, develop, produce and test microelectronic systems applicable to industries, businesses and other institutions
School of Mechanical Engineering
Center of Biomedical Engineering
Center of Biomedical Engineering is established to produce trained manpower in critical areas of the discipline and lead research relevant to improvement of healthcare services in Ethiopia.
Although Biomedical Engineering is broad with different tracks of study, both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs launched are in Bio-instrumentation and Imaging. The track is developed and run in cooperation with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Preparations are underway to launch similar programs in another track, Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Engineering, to be run in cooperation with the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
The vision of the Center is to be a regional focal point for teaching, research, and innovation in three specific areas of biomedical engineering: Bio-instrumentation and Imaging, Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Engineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering.
The Center's mission is to produce the critical manpower in the areas of interest who can be actively involved in the management, design, construction, and installation of equipment and innovative research activities.
Currently, the Center is located at the former School of Pharmacy with few administrative offices, teaching class rooms, and laboratories. In the future, with the support of partners and stakeholders, full-fledged teaching and research campus will be established.
Program of Information Technology and Scientific Computing
We believe in redeeming the Computational Disciplines in Ethiopia but not alone can we do it. We welcome all stakeholders in contributing and amending our efforts in a professional manner and we endeavor in all possible way not matter how much it costs.
Undergraduate: We provide two independent bachelor programs as follows
- Information Technology (4 years)
- Software Engineering (5 years)
